Care ;
Lava Mossy Frog (Theloderma gordoni)—requires maintaining a strictly cool, highly humid, and heavily oxygenated environment to mirror their native, high-altitude rainforest habitats.
- Tank Size: Provide a minimum 18x18x24 inch front-opening terrarium for a small group.
- Layout: Design a paludarium (semi-aquatic) setup. They need a land area with tropical substrate, mixed with a significant, clean water feature.
- Decor: Fill the tank with cork bark, textured branches, and dense live plants like Pothos. These frogs rely heavily on rough surfaces to camouflage and feel safe.
- Temperature: Keep the ambient temperature strictly between 68°F and 75°F (20°C to 24°C). At night, drops down to 60°F (15°C) are highly beneficial. Avoid temperatures above 76°F, as overheating stresses them rapidly.
- Humidity: Maintain constant humidity between 80% and 100%. Use a misting system or automatic rain bar to keep things wet while maintaining robust airflow to prevent stagnant air.
- Lighting: Provide dim, diffused lighting with low-level (around 2%) UVB. They are nocturnal and highly dislike bright lights.
- Filtration: Use a high-quality filter to keep the water constantly moving and oxygenated. Stagnant water will cause their health to decline rapidly.
- Conditioning: Always treat tap water with a dechlorinating water conditioner to eliminate toxic heavy metals and chlorine.
- Food: Feed a variety of small live insects such as crickets, dubia roaches, and black soldier fly larvae.
- Vitamins: Dust all insect prey with calcium and a multivitamin supplement before feeding to prevent metabolic bone disease.
